Edwin Francis Cornell III

Youngsville - A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 12:00 pm in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton for Edwin Francis Cornell, III, age 75, who passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, in Youngsville. Father William Schambaugh will officiate. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton. A Rosary will be recited on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 10:45 am in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milton. Edwin Francis Cornell, III was born on August 3, 1947, in Newark, New Jersey and he was a longtime resident of Youngsville. He and his family moved from New Jersey to New Orleans in 1979 to work on the opening of the second tower of the Marriott Hotel. While in New Orleans he also worked as the executive housekeeping manager at the Windsor Hotel and worked at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel in the French Quarter. In 1998, they moved to Youngsville where he became the manager at the Fairfield Inn in Lafayette. When living in New Orleans, Ed participated in the Mardi Gras parades with the Endymion Krewe for six years. He also enjoyed playing golf with the guys in the family, even though his skills weren’t the greatest. Ed also enjoyed watching golf on television and sharing his endless knowledge of classic movies and television shows to all that would listen. His favorite to watch was “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Ed will always be remembered for his corny dad and grandpa jokes as well as the love and pride he had for his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Christine Cornell; his children, Edwin Cornell (Jana) and Jennifer Melancon (Jeff); his grandchildren, Michael Cornell, Sean Cornell, Hannah Melancon, and Alec Melancon; his sister, Claudette Bonfanti (Bob); his brothers-in-law, John Kmetz (Marianne), and Robert Kmetz; his sister-in-law, Anne Marie Kmetz; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Oberg Cornell and Edwin Cornell; as well as his mother-in-law, Catherine Kmetz and his father-in-law, John Kmetz. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in memory of Edwin Francis Cornell, III to Hospice of Acadiana, www.hospiceacadiana.com, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital, www.stjude.org. The family wishes to offer a heartfelt thank you to the nurses, doctors, and staff at Hospice of Acadiana especially his nurse, Katie Cormier for the care and compassion they offered Ed and his family during his time of need; as well as Father Schambaugh for his support and spiritual guidance.
