Kaplan - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert James Hughes Sr., age 49—a friend, a father, a firefighter—who passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026 in Kaplan while in the line of duty. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at 12:00 Noon at Our Savior's Church Abbeville Campus. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026 from 10:00 AM until service time at Our Savior's Church Abbeville Campus. Robert was born on March 14, 1977 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and he was a resident of Kaplan. He was a man that had immense courage and was always trying to make the best out of bad situations. Even with the hand he was dealt in life, Robert was always trying to raise others up as best he could. As a supportive son, he always checked in on his mother as much as he could, giving her a daily call to check in on her. He loved the color purple and loved animals, especially his dog, Roxie. Robert’s countless friends and family members will always remember him and miss him dearly. “Robert was a firefighter, but most of all, he was a friend. No matter what was going on, Robert always put the fire department first. He was the kind of person who was always ready to lend a hand, help a stranger, and be there when someone needed him.” “Robert, you answered the call when others needed you. You gave your time, your heart, and your life in service to others. You will never be forgotten.” - Meaux-Nunez Fire Department Robert is survived by his children, Robert James Hughes Jr., Kaitlyn A. Hughes, Alexis Renee Hughes, and Tristian Ayala; his grandchildren, Avery Allan Ayala and Riccardo Cuby Ayala; his mother, Catherine DeMarcy; his stepfather, Randy DeMarcy Sr.; his siblings, Jimmy Hughes Sr., Catrina DeMarcy, Randy DeMarcy Jr., Denny DeMarcy, Eric Frederick, Richard Mendel, Christina Mendel, Darlene Mendel, and Regina Mendell; his sisters-in-law, Rachel Abshire and Trastina DeMarcy; his friends, Darrell Domengeaux, Troy Lemaire, Trey Jones, and "Tubaby" Rudd; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 19 years, Lisa Renee Hughes; his biological father, Richie; his brother, David Mendell; his friend, Randy Broussard; his dogs, Baby Girl and Ash; as well as many extended family members. The Hughes family would like to extend a special thank you to his brothers and sisters at the Meaux-Nunez Fire Department, as well as the many firefighters in local fire departments in the area that he considered his family. The support they gave him in life as well as the support they gave him when he needed it most is greatly appreciated and will not soon be forgotten.
