John Leo "Turtle" Guidry

Saint Martinville - John Leo "Turtle" Guidry, age 72, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, April 11, 2024, in Saint Martinville with his loving wife by his side. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Morgan City. John Leo "Turtle" Guidry was born on December 5, 1951, in Morgan City and he was a resident of Saint Martinville for five years. From a young age he began composing music and playing the drums, which was his biggest passion in life. Turtle was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to the camp. He enjoyed watching the New Orleans Saints and Louisiana State University play football while drinking his favorite "buddy-wisers" and burning the meat on the pit which he called, "Barbecuing". Turtle was known for being fun loving, caring, and humorous. He was a great friend to everyone and an even better husband to his wife, Cindy, whom he adored. Turtle cherished his family and was especially proud of his children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed. Turtle is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Cindy Souza Guidry of St. Martinville; his son, Roy L. Savell and Marsha Marie Menard affectionately known as "Pops personal nurse and special family friend" of Lafayette; his daughter Nina Shields and her husband Gene of Republic, MO.; his grandchildren, Lukas Pyle and Kaleb Pyle; his sister, Judith "Judy" Weber; his sisters-in-law, Beryl Guidry Browning and Mary Upton (Micheal); his brothers-in-law, Donald Vicknair, Darrin Vicknair (Jennifer), and Father Jerry C. Kittredge (Virginia); his Godchildren, Julie Theriot, and Shannon Roussel; Marsha Marie Menard affectionately known as "Pops personal nurse and special family friend", as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon "Toby" Guidry and Mirabelle "Belle" Guidry; as well as his siblings, V. Jack Guidry, Linda Guidry Stanley, and Yvette Guidry Tingle. The family wishes to offer a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Touro Rehabilitation Center in New Orleans, and Heart of Hospice, especially Courtney and Lana; his sitter, Liz; his wash crew, Doriene and Cindy; as well as all of his neighbors who helped during his time of need. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cypress Funeral Home & Crematory, 206 W. Lafayette St., Maurice, LA 70555.
