John W. Bergeron

Abbeville - John W. Bergeron, age 89, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at St. Agnes Nursing Home in Breaux Bridge. John was born on September 5, 1936 in Abbeville, where he was a longtime resident. John was a graduate of Abbeville high school and went on to study commercial art at the University of Louisiana of Lafayette, USL at the time. He then continued his education and pursued a masters degree in fine arts as well. From there he went on to inspire and educate people about the Cajun culture and also the local folklore through his various life Works. He published multiple books, Cajun French inspired coloring books for children, and spent countless hours creating a large collection of paintings. The uniqueness of his artwork lies in the captivation he so effortlessly could transpire on his canvases of the Cajun people, and their distinct way of life. Aside from being an author an artist, John was the proud owner of a local store, John’s trading post for 20 years, hunted and fished avidly, and donated his personal artwork to support Catholic missions Vermilion Catholic and several other organizations. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. John is survived by his children, Richard Bergeron of Oklahoma, Roxanne B. Broussard (Steve) of Erath, and Robert Bergeron (Cathy) of Abbeville; his grandchildren, Nicholas Faciane, Nicole Faciane, Marsha F. Lemaire (Jacob), Heidi’s B. Istre (Shea), Jake B. Dugas (Scott), and Dansi Broussard; his great-grandchildren, Logan Lemaire, Landon Lemaire, Caroline Lemaire, Shealyn Istre, Bradyn Istre, Camryn Istre, and Tristyn Istre; his sister, Betty B. Drovandi (Alan) of Australia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy J. Bergeron and Anite Broussard Bergeron; as well as his brother, Donald Bergeron. The family would like to give a special thanks to St. Agnes nursing home, and especially to his nurse Deanna in the Alzheimer’s unit for the care and compassion they offered to him in his time of need. A Christian burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cypress Funeral Home & Crematory, 206 W. Lafayette St., Maurice, LA 70555.
