Catherine "Cappy" Calhoun Edgar

Lafayette - Catherine “Cappy” Calhoun Edgar, 83, of Lafayette, Louisiana, was called to her heavenly home on March 14, 2025. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Cypress Funeral Home in Maurice from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by a celebration of life and resurrection. Catherine’s life began in Bunkie, Louisiana. She was the youngest child of Laura Fenella Munson Calhoun and Teal Caldwell Calhoun. Catherine was a 1959 graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy in Shreveport and attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, but the place she called home was Colfax. In 1963, she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy, with a minor in Special Education -Teacher of Socially Maladjusted and Emotionally Disturbed. She later earned certifications in English (1970) and Elementary and Secondary Mild/Moderate Education (1982). During her school years Catherine excelled in drama, speech, and debate and was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. Catherine was the devoted mother of four children, Laura Gail, Kelly, Sid, and Donna-Sue, with whom she exchanged lessons and love all the days of their lives. Catherine’s professional career spanned over three decades in Louisiana and Texas before her retirement from Caddo Parish School System in 1999. Her passion for literacy education left a lasting impact on countless students—especially those who discovered the pleasure of reading under her guidance. Catherine found joy in music, reading, American history, politics, March Madness, gardening, crafting, refinishing furniture, trivia, puzzles, word games, observing hummingbirds, and sharing coffee with loved ones on the patio. She especially cherished her time collecting shells along the Gulf Coast with her sister, Sally. Catherine’s unshakable faith in her Christian upbringing and beliefs sustained her through many of her life's trials. She always believed that God's will would be done in her life. She is survived by two daughters, Laura Gail Sullivan of Baton Rouge and Donna-Sue Sullivan Dugas (Jude and daughter Sophie) of Lafayette; two sons, Sidney Wallace Sullivan (Pam) of Denham Springs and Kelly C. Sullivan (Isabel) of Mandeville; three grandsons, James Edward (Maggie), Sidney Michael, and Ryan Wallace; four granddaughters, Katherine “Kippy”, Riley, Kelly, and Phoebe; two nieces and a nephew, Catherine “Cappy” Prud’homme (godchild), Anne Aviles, and Kenneth A. “Drew” Prud’homme Jr. (Sarah); five great nieces; one great nephew; and one daughter of the Spirit, Nancy Tabb Marcantel. She was preceded in death by her parents, Laura Munson and Teal C. Calhoun, her sister, Sally Prud’homme, and her brother-in-law, Kenneth A. Prud’homme Sr. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to those who contributed to helping fulfill Catherine’s wish to remain in her home. Special thanks to her neighbors Sonia and Barry Guidry, caregivers of Brightcare staff, Gay Traver, and Terrilynn Comeaux for their dedicated care and kindness.
